First United has partnered with Lu’ma Native Housing Society (Lu’ma) to redevelop their 1965-built church at the corner of Gore and Hastings. The primary driver of this mixed-use redevelopment is to respond to the urgent need for housing, health and social justice in the Downtown Eastside. First United directly engaged community members as well as fellow service providers, government, and community partners, to learn what gaps in services needed to be addressed. The new building will provide 40,000 square feet of purpose-built program space for residents and the surrounding community in the first 4 storeys. Amenities will include two low-barrier drop-in spaces, a heating and cooling centre, outdoor deck, computer lab, administrative and program spaces and a commercial kitchen and dining hall. The upper 7 storeys will provide housing dedicated to Indigenous individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Lu’ma will operate the housing, including a portion leased directly from First United Church for a nominal ($1) fee.
