Rent Geared to Income: 32; Transitional: 12
Begun as a grass-roots organization of women who shared their experiences and supported each other, TSW has grown to provide a range of housing and services to individuals and families impacted by violence against women, youth, and children in the Kitimat area. TSW worked with partners at all levels of government to bring about this new mixed-use development, situated on District land, which was designed with the goal of ensuring women fleeing violence don’t live in poverty or experience homelessness. As such it provides a range of housing options along a housing continuum from short-term transitional beds (and support) to independent affordable housing. The later was important to include because rent increases in the private market make it difficult for women who are ready to move on but who can’t afford to do so. The development also incorporates a 24-hour childcare centre on-site, recognizing that childcare is a key hindrance to women accessing the workforce, especially those that involve shift-work or unconventional hours.
