Propolis Housing Cooperative is a new non-profit housing co-operative founded in 2020 in Kamloops to develop affordable, sustainable, and net-zero multi-family housing. Its first housing project is a building with 53 net-zero homes above ground-floor commercial space intended for a daycare and a performing arts space, with plans to accommodate the Effie Arts Collective, an existing tenant.
Net-zero homes produce as much energy as they consume, resulting in a carbon-neutral footprint. The project will include solar panels. All homes will be operated as non-profit cooperative housing with rents below market.
The project is notable for raising over $1.1 million by issuing community bonds directly to finvestors, demonstrating strong local support for alternative financing models. The City of Kamloops also contributed an unused section of Hilltop Avenue for the redevelopment.
